How we choose the businesses of The City Barcelona
No listing in this directory is here by accident: each one has cleared a two-round selection (an objective Google Maps review cut-off and a weighted analysis of up to nine criteria). Here is the whole process, no fine print.
The full journey
From the entire city to the final list, a business goes through five stages. Each stage trims the field; only a fraction reaches the end.
Candidates: all of Barcelona
We track the active businesses of each sector across the city and its neighbourhoods.
Entry cut-off (criteria 1 & 2)
Only those proving 4+ stars and more than 20 Google Maps reviews stay in the race.
Weighted analysis (criteria 3-8)
Each finalist is scored on six weighted criteria: rating, volume, freshness, consistency, profile and local roots.
Editorial filter (criterion 9)
Someone from the team reviews the outcome: coherence, suspicious signals and fit with the directory.
Publication
The listing goes live and joins the periodic re-check cycle.
The nine criteria, one by one
The first two act as the gate: if a business does not meet them, there is nothing else to look at. The next six rank and prioritise those already inside. The last one is human.
Four stars or more on Google Maps
The average rating must sit at 4.0 or above at selection time. There may be great places just under that line (we know), but our entry bar sits exactly there, and if the average does not reach it, there is no entry.
More than 20 reviews on Google Maps
A 4.8 with three reviews proves little; with forty, a different story. We require more than 20 reviews so the average actually says something statistically, rather than hanging on luck (or the owner's family).
Average rating
Among those already past the cut-off, the exact score still counts: a 4.1 does not weigh the same as a 4.8 held year after year. It is the heaviest criterion because it condenses the experience of every customer who has been through the door.
Review volume
More reviews mean a more reliable average and a bigger community standing behind the business. Volume works as social cross-checking: several hundred customers being wrong at once is quite a feat.
Freshness of activity
A 4.9 won three years ago and silent ever since does not tell the whole film. We value businesses that stay alive and keep collecting reviews: the quality must belong to today, not be a fond memory.
Consistency of opinions
We look at how the scores are spread, not just the average. A business with nearly all reviews between 4 and 5 stars is sturdier than one with the same average but full of 1s and 5s cancelling each other out.
A complete, up-to-date profile
Accurate hours, a phone that gets picked up, real photos, a working website and well-described services. Whoever keeps their Google profile tidy usually keeps the business behind it tidy too.
Roots in Barcelona and its neighbourhoods
We prioritise businesses with a real bond with the city: a settled presence in their neighbourhood, reviews from local people and an offer designed for barcelonins, not one-off appearances.
Editorial filter
Data opens the door, but the last word belongs to people. Before publishing we check that everything adds up: reviews matching services, no odd signals (inflated scores, suspicious opinions) and a business that fits what a Barcelona local would expect to find here.
How much each criterion weighs
When several businesses clear the entry cut-off, criteria 3 to 8 rank them with these weights. They add up to 100%: rating leads, but no decision rests on a single metric.
Criteria 1 and 2 (minimum stars and reviews) and 9 (editorial filter) do not score: they are the entry gate and the final seal.
In or out?
The method summed up in one glance: what a business must meet for you to see it in the directory, and what rules it out without discussion.
It gets in if…
- It holds 4.0+ stars on average on Google Maps
- It exceeds 20 public reviews
- It keeps activity and recent reviews coming
- Its profile is well kept with real information
- It can prove roots in Barcelona or its neighbourhood
It stays out if…
- The average rating sits below 4.0
- It has 20 reviews or fewer
- We detect fake reviews or doctored ratings
- The business has been closed or inactive for a while
The life of a listing, step by step
Publishing is not the end of the road: every listing enters a watch cycle that can send it back to the start if the business stops meeting the method.
Sector sweep
We go through the active businesses of the sector in the city: coordinates, Google Maps profile, reviews and activity.
Entry cut-off
Criteria 1 and 2 are applied. Those below 4+ stars or 20+ reviews are discarded on the spot.
Weighted scoring
Finalists are scored on criteria 3 to 8 and ordered by result: that sets their position in the listing.
Editorial filter and onboarding
A person validates the result, the listing is created with its photos, services, hours and neighbourhood, and published in its category.
Periodic re-check
We re-check ratings, reviews and activity. If a business slips below the bar, it leaves the directory: no spot here is for life.
Frequently asked questions about the method
How is each business's place in the directory decided?
Solely by the objective criteria on this page: rating, volume, freshness, consistency, profile and local roots. The order is never negotiated and does not depend on outside arrangements; if a business improves its reviews it climbs, and if it drops it falls. There is a manual submission route for those unwilling to wait for the periodic scan, but it goes through exactly the same criteria: it guarantees neither entry nor a better position for anyone.
My business meets the requirements, why is it not listed?
Because the city scan moves in stages: we work sector by sector and neighbourhood by neighbourhood, and we may not have reached yours yet. It is also possible the editorial filter flagged something we want to verify first. Request inclusion from the contact page and we will take a look.
How often do you re-check what is already published?
Every listing goes through a periodic re-check: average rating, new reviews, business activity and the state of its Google Maps profile. If anything drops below the required level, the business leaves the list until it qualifies again.
Why trust Google Maps reviews?
Because it is the platform with the largest volume and identity verification in Spain, though it is not our only source: we cross-check with other specialised platforms where the sector has them. That is precisely why we measure consistency and freshness, to catch inflated scores or ratings kept alive artificially.
What exactly do "roots in Barcelona" mean?
That the business genuinely takes part in the life of the city: customers writing from the same neighbourhood, a presence sustained over time and an offer designed for barcelonins. It keeps the directory free of technically correct listings with no real relationship with the city.
